Virtual reader
===============
The virtual reader, who accounts for 2 Mo, is created during the treatment of the Config.sys file. He is created using the read-write memory of the system, which makes it possible to emulate a physical hard disk. Without this virtual reader, only one diskette of 1,44 Mo would not be enough to store all the tools for diagnosis and the pilots of CD-Romanian.

Warning : Since the virtual reader is created during the treatment of the Config.sys file
and that it uses the read-write memory of the system, it is temporary. It will disappear if you start again your computer normally.

This section contains instructions of resolution of problems which apply when it is necessary to use the diskette of Windows 98 starting. These instructions are intended to help the user with to start at least in mode without failure, in order to reach using Windows 98 and to solve the encountered problems.

Starting of the computer in mode without failure
-----------------------------------------------------------------
There are several reasons for which Windows 98 can not start correctly. To solve one 
problem of starting, initially try to start your computer in mode without failure. If you reach that point, you can use the system of Assistance and the utilities of resolution of problems while clicking in the Démarrer menu on Assistance.

*** To start your computer in mode without failure ***

1. Withdraw the diskette of starting and start again your computer. Once the computer started again but before the loading of Windows, maintain key CTRL inserted until the menu of starting of Microsoft Windows 98 posts. (If you carry out Windows 95, press on the F8 key when the message “Starting of Windows 95” is posted.)

2. In the menu of starting, select Mode without failure.

The program of installation fails and the computer does not start

The failure of the program of installation of Windows 98 can have various causes. The section below

If you obtain one of the following error messages during the execution of the program of installation:

* “nonvalid Disc system”
* “Bad version of MS-DOS”
* “the Command.com file misses or is corrupted”
* “Errors of the pilot of compression”

The reader of starting of your computer probably requires updated system files. You can use order SYS to copy the files necessary from your computer.

NOTE : if you charge a software of compression, you must know the letter of your reader host. In general, it is about the letter H. If you do not charge any software of compression, you must to carry out order SYS on your reader C.

To use order SYS to copy system files from your computer:

1. Start again your computer using the diskette of Windows 98 starting, select option 2 in the menu of starting, then press on ENTRY.

2. To invites A:\, type SYS X: (where X designates your reader host or of starting).

3. If the procedure functioned, the message “System transferred” is posted. If not, you ensure that you typed the good letter of your reader host.

IMPORTANT: if you installed a software provided with your hard disk, read documentation indicating procedure to start the computer using a diskette.

Antivirus software
-------------------------
If antivirus software is carried out during the procedure of installation, the program of installation is likely not to manage to update the system files correctly. In this case, decontaminate or désinstallez the antivirus program and re-execute the program of installation.

NOTE : certain computers are provided with integrated antivirus software. This software must also be decontaminated before the execution of the program of installation. If not perhaps, you will receive a message indicating that the recording of principal starting was modified. If you receive this message, you MUST accept the modifications. If the program of installation ceases answering during the detection of the material installed on your computer, 
extinguish the computer, wait a few seconds, then relight it. You will have to perhaps repeat this operation several times, because the program of installation can cease answering at the time of various modules of detection.

NOTE : use the button Marche/Arrêt to extinguish your computer completely. Do not use the button of rebootstrapping (reset) nor combination CTRL+ALT+SUPPR: that only makes it possible to start again the computer.

If the program of installation always fails, start your computer in mode without failure in order to consult the headings of assistance concerning the detection of the material.

Not assembled compressed readers
----------------------------------------------------
There are several reasons for which compressed readers can be inaccessible. If your Windows repertory is on a compressed reader who is not assembled, you cannot start Windows. If you think of having problems on the level of the compressed readers, try to use ScanDisk to solve them.

This section describes the use of certain utilities which are on the diskette of Windows 98 starting. To carry out one of these programs, proceed in the following way:

1. Insert the diskette of Windows 98 starting in the disk drive, then start again your computer.

2. In the menu of starting, select option 1 or 2 (according to whether you or not wish the access to the reader of CD-ROM), then press on ENTRY.

3. To invites of order MS-DOS (A:\), type the name of the utility which you wish to carry out, then press on ENTRY.

SCANDISK.EXE and CHKDSK.EXE

These two programs make it possible to detect the possible errors on your hard disk. If you think of having damaged files or other problems of hard disk, carry out ScanDisk for to detect and repair these errors.

If you have compressed readers, perhaps you will receive an error message indicating that you do not have sufficient memory to check the compressed readers. To solve this problem, start your computer using the diskette of Windows 98 starting, as indicated in stage 1 
higher in this section. Select option 2. Perhaps thus, ScanDisk will have sufficiently of memory to check your compressed readers.

If ScanDisk does not manage to check your readers, try to use CHKDSK.EXE. CHKDSK seeks the files with cross connections and the lost units of allowance. 

SYS.COM

Order SYS makes it possible to copy the system files of a disc towards another. Your computer needs these system files to start. 
To carry out order SYS on your reader C, type:

SYS C: 

then press on ENTRY. After a few seconds, the message “System transferred” is posted.

The following files are copied from your hard disk during procedure SYS:

* IO.SYS
* MSDOS.SYS
* COMMAND.COM

If order SYS C: do not function and that you have a compressed reader, type the letter corresponding to your reader host. With the program DblSpace or DrvSpace, the letter H is generally assigned to the reader host. If you do not know the letter of your reader, carry out ScanDisk 
and look at if it is a question of your compressed reader.

FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.EXE
------------------------------------------

FDISK and FORMAT are utilities necessary to the installation of a new hard disk on your computer or for a restarting with a virgin disc. FDISK is used to create a partition, then FORMAT makes it possible to make this partition usable.

WARNING : a misuse of FDISK can destroy all the data of your hard disk. If you cannot use FDISK, consult the documentation of your computer.

You can use the version Windows 98 of FDISK to create partitions FAT32 on readers of more than 512 Mo. FAT32 makes it possible to reduce the size of the clusters on the bulky readers and to create single partitions on readers of more than 2 Go.

To post the current state of your reader, type FDISK /STATUS with invites of MS-DOS order.

After having partitionné a reader using FDISK, you must use the order FORMAT. To format a reader that you come from partitionner, type the following order:

FORMAT X:

where X indicates the letter of the reader whom you wish to format. 

If you wish to format the reader C, you must transform it into disc system so that your computer can start. With this intention, type /s at the end of the order FORMAT. 

For example :

FORMAT C: /s

The system files of starting will be automatically copied after the formatting of the reader.

HIGH OF PAGE Pilots of reader of CD-ROM

The diskette of Windows 98 starting comprises a whole of pilots of reader of generic CD-ROMS. These pilots function with the majority of the models of CD-ROM IDE ATAPI and SCSI.

If your reader of CD-ROM does not function with these pilots, use the pilots provided with your reader.

You will find below a list of the current problems relating to the pilots of reader of CD-ROM.

1. The readers of CD-ROMS connected to charts its are likely not to function correctly.

2. The former readers of CD-ROM owners (for example, Mitsumi, Panasonic or Sony) are likely not to function with these pilots. The same applies to certain old controllers IDE.

3. The pilots SCSI who are on the diskette of starting deal with the majority of the charts Adaptec, Buslogic and Mylex. Some other readers of CD-ROM SCSI are likely not to function with the pilots provided by the diskette of starting.

4. If your controller SCSI is configured for a beach of nonstandard i/o, the pilots are likely not to detect your chart SCSI. Consult the documentation of your pilot SCSI to know the beaches of i/o per defect for your chart.

5. No pilot is provided for the readers of CD-ROM PC Card (PCMCIA

EXT.EXE

The order EXT. is used with the Extract.exe utility in order to facilitate the extraction of the files Windows 98 towards your hard disk. That makes it possible to replace missing or damaged files.

This utility is particularly useful if you receive messages concerning of the missing files during the starting or of the errors of execution (for example, error of general protection or error relating to nonvalid pages). 

To use Ext.exe to extract a file

1. Use the diskette of starting to start your computer. Select option 1, then press on ENTRY.

2. You ensure that the Windows 98 CD-ROM is inserted in the reader.

3. Type EXT. with invites of MS-DOS order, then press on ENTRY.

4. Follow the instructions which are posted with the screen to indicate the site of the files of the program of installation of Windows 98, the files which you wish to extract and the site towards which you wish to copy the extracted files.

NOTE : If the letter of your reader of CD-ROM is E, indicate the site of the files of the program of installation in the following way: E:\WIN98

If you wish to extract several files at the same time, you can use generic characters.
